Designing native gardens that genuinely belong on the Sunshine Coast.

When I started this studio over a decade ago, I noticed a few common frustrations among homeowners on the Sunshine Coast. People were building incredible custom homes, but the gardens often fell short in several distinct ways.

On one side were traditional construction companies that treated design as a quick afterthought just to sell retaining walls, concrete, and turf. On the other side were designs relying heavily on imported, water-hungry plants that constantly struggled against our heavy summer downpours, humid heat, and coastal salt spray.

I also noticed how many new landscapes seemed completely disconnected from where we actually live. You constantly see gardens built to imitate a resort in Bali or a desert villa in Palm Springs instead of reflecting South East Queensland. While those styles might look interesting on internet mood boards, they ignore our local climate and feel completely out of place against our natural Australian bushland and coastal backdrop.

There was also a growing trend where modern landscapes looked impressive in a magazine photograph but felt cold, sterile, and uninviting in real life. Too many projects prioritized visual form over everyday function. They ended up with way too much hard paving and concrete and nowhere near enough living plant life. They were missing physical comfort, natural shade, and that feeling of enclosure that makes an outdoor room actually pleasant to sit in.

Sometimes, well-meaning architects or building designers would try to draft the landscaping themselves to keep everything cohesive. While they are brilliant at building structure, outdoor spatial design and botanical science are completely different disciplines. Without a specialized understanding of local soil biology and outdoor flow, those well-intentioned layouts often led to mixed results once construction was finished.

I wanted to start a studio where custom architecture and local native ecology actually work together as one cohesive property. My goal was simple. I wanted to design gardens that naturally fit the surrounding environment, feel comfortable to live in every day, and last for decades without requiring constant life support or chemical fertilisers.
